Updating Vandeleur Antiques online shop

1.Introduction #

In this manual I will explain how to add new products to your online shop and also how to use product tags like New, Sale, Sold etc.

But first I’ll start with some tips on getting the best out of your product photos.

2.Product Photos Tips #

To get the best photos for your product follow these guidelines:

  • Always use a stand to get sharp photos.
  • Take care not to photograph labels in case they display a different price than what you’re asking for online.
  • Use a non distracting background when possible.
  • Take photos in a lower resolution. The best setting would be a photo that’s about 100 pixels width at a 72 dpi resolution. There might be a setting on your camera that lets you do that. Otherwise you might have to use photo editing software to scale your photos down. Gimp is a good free software.

3.Upload Product Photos #

Before you create a new product it is best to first upload all the photos of your products to the website in the WordPress Media library. This is better because in most cases you will be creating more than one new product and to be uploading photos for each and every new product is more time consuming.

  1. Hover the mouse cursor over the WordPress menu Media and click on Add New.
  2. In the next page click on the button Select Files
  3. Select your photos from the folder on your computer where you have them stored. You can select more than one photo by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on each photo you want to upload. When you selected all the new photos on your computer click the Open button
  4. The new photos are now imported into WordPress media library.

After all photos are uploaded you can go on and create a new product as explained below.

4.Add a New Product #

To add a new product to your online shop;

Figure 1 Add a new product

In the left WordPress menu hover over Products and click Add new product.

4.1.New Product Page #

Figure 2 New Product Page

After clicking on Add a new product the New Product page will open as shown in Figure 2. It might look slightly different in your browser because some sections might be open. I have numbered each section in Figure 2.

Figure 2.1: This is where you enter the title of the product. Keep it short and think about how people would search for this product. The title will also be part of the URL of your product like as in https://vandeleurantiques.com/my-new-product-title

Figure 2.2: This is the long description of the product but it is not used in your online shop. Leave blank.

Figure 2.3: Catalogue mode options is used in your shop. It enables the shop to function as a catalogue without offering people to directly order a product but instead asking them to contact you. The settings here can be left as they are, no need to change anything.

Figure 2.4: Yoast SEO section offers you to finetune SEO settings for this particular product so it will be easier for people to Google it. More about this later on.

Figure 2.5: This is where you insert the product price. Insert price in the field labelled Regular Price (€). Other options here are explained later.

Figure 2.6: Short description section. This is where you can write a short description about your product. I made use of bullet points here.

Figure 2.7: Product Categories. Select the proper category the product belongs to. Not selecting a category will result in the product not being displayed on the website. In case you need a new category tell me and I will create it for you.

Figure 2.8: Product Image: This is the main image that is displayed when all your products are listed on one page. Click here to see how to add your product image.

Figure 2.9: Product Gallery. These are the other product images that show under the main image in product detailed view.

Figure 2.10: Click this button to save the new product.

Figure 3 shows how everything looks like on the front end of the website.

4.2.Add a product photo #

To add a product photo:

In the Product Image section (Figure 2.8) click on the link Set Product Image

A window will open as shown in Figure 4 below

Figure 4 Add Product Image

I presume you already uploaded your product photos to the WordPress library as explained in paragraph 3

  1. Be sure the tab Media Library is selected (Figure 4.1)
  2. Click on the photo you want to use as your main product image. Only one image is to be selected. (Figure 4.2)
  3. In the Title field enter a title for the image (Figure 4.3). This will by default display the original file name of your photo, but should be changed into something that is easier to read. This is good for SEO. You can use the same value for the Caption and Alt Text fields.
  4. Click on the Set Product Image button (Figure 4.4) to set the photo as the main product image.

5.Product Stickers #

Each product can display small stickers that show diagonally over the product image in either the top left or top right corner. These stickers can be NEW, SALE or SOLD.

The NEW sticker will show automatically whenever you create a new product and this sticker will be shown for 10 days. After 10 days the sticker will disappear. It is possible to change the amount of days a NEW sticker shows.

5.1.Sale Sticker #

The SALE sticker will show once you change the regular price to a lower price. It is also possible to schedule when a product will go on sale and when it will not be on sale anymore.

Figure 6

To set a product to SALE:

  1. Click on the WordPress menu Product to display a list of all your products.
  2. Click on the product title link of the product you want to put on sale
  3. In the product page scroll down to the section Product data and insert a lower price in the field labelled Sale price (€) (Figure 6.1)
  4. You can also set the schedule here by clicking on the Schedule link (Figure 6.2)

Don’t forget to update the product page after you’re done.

5.2.Sold Sticker #

The SOLD sticker will show once you change inventory to Out of Stock

Figure 7

To set a product to SOLD:

This manual was only intended for product management in your online shop, but there are two other manuals I would like to bring to your attention.

You’ll notice that you can finetune SEO settings for each product so they will be better ranked in Google search. I made a manual about the plugin that does this here

DIVI Page Builder
In case you want to make changes to text on your pages you should have a look at the manual about DIVI Page Builder
